Fun and Free in VB: Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art

Let's face it, parenting on vacation can be a whirlwind. One minute you're the ultimate tour guide, exploring historical landmarks; the next, you're a human referee, breaking up sibling squabbles. When the weather takes a turn for the worse and the beach plans go out the window, it can feel like you're trapped in a never-ending loop of hotel room boredom. But fear not, fellow parent! I've got a secret weapon to share: the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA).

Now, I know what you're thinking. Art? With kids? Isn't that like trying to herd cats in a wind tunnel? Well, surprise, surprise! MOCA is an unexpected gem that can actually be a really cool outing for the whole family.

What to Expect at MOCA with Kids

Let's talk about the elephant in the room. Kids and art. It's a tricky combo. But here's the thing: kids are naturally curious. They're little sponges, soaking up the world around them. And MOCA can be a fantastic sensory experience. There are colors, shapes, textures, and sometimes even interactive elements that can spark their imagination.

Sure, your little Picasso might not appreciate the nuances of conceptual art, but they might find a piece that makes them laugh, or feel something. And that's the magic of art, isn’t it? It evokes emotion. And sharing that experience with your kid, even if it's just a shared giggle at a wacky sculpture, is priceless.

Tips for a Successful MOCA Visit

  • Keep it low-key: No pressure to understand everything. The goal is to enjoy the experience together.

  • Let them explore: Don't be afraid to let your kids wander and discover. You might be surprised at what catches their eye.

  • Talk about what you see: Even if your kids don't have much to say, talking about the art can help them process their thoughts and feelings.

  • Snap some pics: Capture those special moments. You'll cherish these memories forever.

MOCA Magic: More Than Just Rainy Day Fun

Main Gallery: Made in VA Biennial

While MOCA is an excellent escape on those rainy Virginia Beach days, it's also a fantastic destination for sunny outings. The museum's ever-changing exhibitions guarantee a fresh experience every time you visit.

Currently, the "Made in VA Biennial" is a must-see. This impressive showcase of Virginia's artistic talent features over 87 works from 61 artists across the state. As a former Falls Church resident, I was particularly excited to see Kara Braciale's work represented. It's inspiring to witness the creative energy thriving right here in our backyard.

Ryan Lytle’s "Coupe De Pouce" is a standout piece that demands attention. His stunning mural of Virginia's state bird, the cardinal, is a perfect photo op for families. Don't be shy about asking fellow museum-goers to capture the moment. Virginia Beach is known for its friendly locals, so you're likely to encounter some genuine southern hospitality.

Fleming Gallery: Tell the Bees

Feeling a connection to nature? The current exhibit, "Tell the Bees" by Heather Beardsley, is more than just an art show – it's an interactive experience. Visitors can whisper messages of hope for a healthy environment into a hidden microphone, sending them directly to a nearby bee haven. This innovative exhibit uses art to spark conversation about the importance of pollinators and inspire action towards a greener future.

Make a Day of It

MOCA is located in the heart of Virginia Beach's ViBe Creative District, a vibrant hub of shops, restaurants, and entertainment. So, after your art adventure, you can explore the local boutiques, grab a delicious bite to eat, or catch a live performance.

Bonus: Free Parking

MOCA offers free parking on-site, making it a convenient and affordable option for your visit.
